Wide Receiver
Martin Nance
College: Miami (Ohio)
Year: Senior
Height: 6’4"
Weight: 212
Birthday: May 26, 1983
Martin Nance exploded as a sophomore in 2003, catching 90 balls for 1,498 yards and 11 touchdowns. Ben Roethlisberger’s go-to receiver, he averaged 107 yards per game and had at least five catches in 11 games that season. Big Ben’s favorite target pulled in nine catches for 169 yards and a touchdown in Miami’s bowl victory over Louisville.
Last year, Nance was picking up where he had left off until a knee injury in the Red Hawks’ fifth game ended his season early. The knee was surgically repaired, and Nance is expected to make a full recovery and be ready to start the season.
Nance uses his height and long arms to get his hands on balls that would be out of range for most receivers, and has excellent coordination and body control to adjust to the ball in flight. Defensive backs tend to underestimate his speed because he runs with long, effortless strides but he can cover a lot of ground very quickly.
If Nance can make a complete comeback from his knee injury, he has a chance to hear his name called very early in the draft. When healthy, he is a dominant player and is cut in the same (big) mold as most of the other receivers who have been drafted in the first round.
