Wide Receiver
Santonio Holmes

College: Ohio State
Year: Junior
Height: 5’10"
Weight: 183
Birthday: March 3, 1984

Ohio State’s Santonio Holmes has the ability to take over a football game. Last year against Marshall, he pulled in 10 receptions for 224 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown. Against Northwestern, he caught 10 balls for 99 yards, including the 21-yard touchdown that sent the game to overtime. Holmes also returned a punt 63 yards for a score in that game.

Holmes, who is the second cousin of the Jaguars’ Fred Taylor, has sub-4.4 speed, the quickness to cut on a dime, and the vision to spot openings in the broken field. The Buckeyes take advantage of these skills by using him as a receiver and as a kickoff and punt return specialist. His hands and routes, while not his strengths, have improved as he’s gained experience and he is able to use his exceptional athletic ability to position himself to make the tough catch.

At 5’10”, Holmes isn’t exactly the biggest target on the field. He has committed some key turnovers in the past, including a fumble against North Carolina State in 2003 and a muffed put against Wisconsin last year.

Holmes plans on making 2005 his “money year,” and has said that he’ll turn pro if he approaches his goals of 70 catches, 1,200 yards, and 15 touchdowns.
