Wide Receiver
Chad Jackson
College: Florida
Year: Junior
Height: 6’1"
Weight: 213
Birthday: March 6, 1985
There is a significant list of Florida receivers who have been unable to translate their college success in Steve Spurrier’s offense to the NFL (is it time to add Jabar Gaffney?). Chad Jackson never played for Spurrier, but Urban Meyer’s spread option attack hasn’t exactly produced a “who’s who” of NFL wideouts yet, either.
Jackson became the Gators’ go-to guy as a junior but really opened some eyes at the combine when he ran a 4.32 40. He is an excellent all-around athlete with nice size, leaping ability, body control, long arms, and big hands. Jackson has made some highlight film acrobatic catches, although he also made a few careless drops, and he will go over the middle.
Jackson’s tight-end-like yards-per-catch stat for 2005 is in part a product of Florida’s new offense, which did not send him on as many vertical routes as he ran in 2004 when he averaged 22.3 yards per catch (but only had 29 catches). He did not always play with the same speed and explosiveness that he showed at the combine while either running his patterns or after the catch.
Jackson has the tools to be a successful pro but must do a better job translating his stopwatch speed to the field than he did last season. On draft day he should benefit from being part of a relatively weak receiver class.
