Defensive Lineman
Rodrique Wright
College: Texas
Year: Junior
Height: 6’4"
Weight: 315
Birthday: July 31, 1984
Rodrique Wright is the nephew of former wide receiver Elmo Wright and has the same genes for agility and athleticism that made his uncle a star at the University of Houston and a first-round pick of the Chiefs in 1971. The Longhorn is very quick for a player of his size and has impressive pass rush skills.
A product of Houston’s Alief Hastings High School, Wright started nine games as a true freshman at left defensive tackle in Texas’ 4-3 scheme. As a sophomore he led the Horns in sacks (7.5), quarterback pressures (30), and passes batted down (3), posting better stats than fellow tackle Marcus Tubbs, the first-round pick of the Seahawks last April. Wright projects to defensive end in a 3-4 defense as he has the size to take on double teams as well as the ability to put heat on the quarterback.
Wright does not always work as hard he should. After not giving his best effort in an offseason conditioning workout, he earned the nickname "Chips," as in "cashing in his chips" and shutting it down for the day. Wright also focuses too much on getting upfield to rush the passer, leaving the defense susceptible to inside running plays.
With Tubbs gone, Wright will be “The Man” in the Longhorn front four for the first time and the focal point of opponent blocking schemes. If he is up to that task, he will have great incentive to buck the trend and leave the Texas program early.
