Wide Receiver
Kelly Campbell
College:
Georgia Tech
Year: Senior
Height: 5’11"
Weight:
170
Birthday: July 23, 1980
40 Time: 4.36

Strengths: After setting records his junior year, Kelly Campbell watched his quarterback (Joe Hamilton) and receiving partner (Dez White) head off to the NFL. Determined to prove it was his talent, and not the talent around him, Campbell nearly duplicated his 1999 numbers in 2000, a testament to both his skills and determination.

Campbell is very fast and extremely athletic. He reacts well to the thrown ball, has better-than-average hands and can flat-burn in the open field. He plays a bit like Ernest Givins, always shaking and baking and trying to pick up the extra yard. And though small, he has no fear. Campbell’s also proven to be a competent rusher and an excellent kick returner.

In a nutshell, he’s a gamebreaker.

Areas of concern: Size. Campbell met with NFL scouts last year to discuss entering the draft and was told he’d be a third round pick at best. So he came back to Tech in order to increase his strength. Right now, Campbell doesn’t have the build to be a physical presence in the NFL (i.e. he better not even think about going across the middle).

Campbell also has a tendency to run lazy routes because he has the capacity to make up for any mistakes with his speed, something he won’t be able to do in the bigger and faster NFL, though most scouts think when he’s really on, he’s a wonderful route-runner.

Is he sponge-worthy?: Absolutely. Because of his size, and the depth of wide receiver talent likely to be available next year, Campbell’s probably a late first round, early second round pick. The Texans hold the top pick in round two, as well as the 15th. If he’s around, he’d make an excellent second or third pick in team history.

Campbell has a knack for making big plays. His 21 career receiving touchdowns obliterated the previous Tech record of 14 — and he still has his senior season to build on it. Fourteen of those 21 TD’s covered 30 or more yards, and last year, he averaged 21.8 yards a carry on four rushing attempts, scoring twice on runs of 41 and 50 yards.

Campbell’s a threat every time he touches the football and all by himself increases team speed.
