Tight End
Vernon Davis

College: Maryland
Year: Junior
Height: 6’4"
Weight: 263
Birthday: January 31, 1984

No other prospect for this year’s draft has seen his stock soar since the combine like Vernon Davis has. Davis set combine records for tight ends in the 40 (4.38) and the vertical jump (42”) while weighing in at over 260 lbs. Some teams picking lower in the first round like Indianapolis left disappointed as his freakish performance ensured that he would not slip that far.

Davis is more than just a workout warrior. Besides the obvious match-up problems that his size and speed create for a defense, he also possesses legitimate receiver skills. He understands how to exploit different coverages and has a knack for getting separation from defenders. Davis will battle for any ball thrown his way and has the hands and concentration to make the difficult catch.

Davis is an inconsistent blocker and may never be more than average in that phase of the game, although he is capable of pancaking a defender on occasion. He is relatively inexperienced and will likely need some time to adjust to a new offense and the speed of the game at the NFL level.

Kellen Winslow was the sixth pick in the 2004 draft and widely considered one of the best tight end prospects to ever come out, and Davis is bigger and faster than Winslow was. Davis will be a very hot prospect on draft day as every offensive coordinator wants an Antonio Gates or a Tony Gonzalez — a tight end that is a downfield receiving threat.
