For anyone looking to find the next Roy Williams at safety, look no further than his eventual replacement at Oklahoma, Donte Nicholson. Playing the hybrid position on the Sooner defense now named for the first round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in 2002, Nicholson has already made it his own.
So, if a player wants to be cast in the Roy Williams mold, he better be big, fast, and a sure tackler. He better be smart and physical, too. Nicholson is all of those things. As they did with Williams, the Sooners keep Nicholson near the line of scrimmage and allow him to put pressure on an offensive backfield like a blitzing linebacker. While Nicholson made his presence felt with six sacks and ten tackles for a loss in 2003, he is also quite adept at turning his hips and using his 4.4-speed to cover a receiver deep into the secondary.
Nicholson transferred from junior college to Oklahoma before the 2003 season and was an effective starter from the first game in the vaunted Sooner defense. He is a natural at strong safety, and he is a quick and willing learner. Nicholson may not run his mouth a lot, but he does have the kind of work ethic that Texans coaches will adore if he is selected by Houston next April.
