Outside Linebacker
Matt Roth

College: Iowa
Year: Senior
Height: 6’3"
Weight: 255
Birthday: October 14, 1982

Matt Roth brings a lot to the table, not the least of which is his sense of humor. When asked about getting his picture in Playboy Magazine (as part of its annual All-American team), he replied, "I thought my mom and sister would beat me to it."

Roth also brings the ability to rush the passer, amassing 22 sacks in the last two seasons. He is a leader for the Hawkeyes and has twice won Iowa’s “Hustle Team” award, for defense in 2003 and for special teams in 2002.

A fiery competitor, Roth once ripped the facemask off teammate Robert Gallery’s helmet during practice. He can get too intense at times, occasionally losing focus and drawing penalty flags. Roth, who plays defensive end in Iowa’s 4-3 scheme, has little or no coverage experience since his days as a high school linebacker.

Roth is a near clone of Texan draftee Jason Babin — both are about the same size, know how to get to quarterbacks, play or played defensive end in college, go hard on every down, were high school wrestlers, are from the Midwest, and sport tattoo-laden arms. Like Babin, Roth projects to the left outside linebacker position in the Texan defense since he has the size to battle tight ends.
