Strengths: Clarence Farmer is a dangerous combination of speed and power. At over 220 lbs., the former Houston Booker T. Washington Golden Eagle has the strength and balance to break tackles. He also has the acceleration, vision, and run skills to score from anywhere on the field, with several runs of over 60 yards on his resume’. Farmer led the Pac-10 in rushing in 2001 (his last full season) with over 1,200 yards as the feature back in John Mackovic’s pro-style offense.
Last year, Farmer struggled to get untracked in Arizona’s first two games. Against Wisconsin, however, he showed the form that Wildcat fans had been waiting to see as he exploded for 131 yards on 20 carries, including a 70-yard touchdown sprint.
Areas of Concern: In his first two years at Arizona, Farmer earned a reputation as a loose cannon with a penchant for taunting opponents, talking trash, and giving less than his best effort on the field when the ball was not in his hands. He showed signs of a new maturity at the beginning of his junior season, embracing a leadership role and actively looking to serve as a role model for younger teammates. By the spring, however, Farmer was ruled academically ineligible and there were whispers coming out of Tucson that Farmer was in Mackovic’s doghouse for insubordination. Farmer considered entering the supplemental draft but got his grades in order and is back on the team. Still, questions remain regarding his attitude and reliability.
Farmer suffered cartilage damage to his left knee in Arizona’s fourth game last year and missed the remainder of the season. He did not participate in spring practice for academic and (allegedly) disciplinary reasons, so although he has gone through fall drills, his knee has not been tested in game-like conditions.
How Would He Look in Steel Blue? There is no way Charley Casserley would ever spend a draft pick on a flashy running back who only played in four games before injuring his knee and then having academic problems. Okay, well…maybe. The similarities between Tony Hollings and Farmer end there. Farmer’s talent is obvious, but so is his lack of discipline. Dom Capers preaches reliability and maximum effort, and Farmer needs to show that his attitude as well as his knee have been rehabilitated in order to be high on the Texans’ board.
