Rodrique Wright isn’t your typical 300+ lb. defensive tackle. As a senior against Oklahoma, he recovered a fumble and ran it back 67 yards for a touchdown. Not many big men could run that far without running out of gas, much less outrun and elude would-be tacklers along the way.
Wright, a product of Houston’s Alief Hastings High School, is a powerful bull rusher who can muscle past blockers into the backfield and take on the double teams that opposing offenses routinely throw at him. He is also very quick off the snap and can be used on line stunts to penetrate and disrupt the offense. Wright has the frame to handle more weight, so he should be able to get even bigger and stronger.
Wright’s work ethic has been called into question in the past, but he supposedly has made great strides in that area and better understands the commitment necessary to compete at a high level. On the field, he is not as consistent as a top player should be and will disappear for extended stretches.
Wright has the tools to be a standout at the NFL level if he is willing to pay the price. He could play tackle in a 4-3 alignment or end in a 3-4.
