Some observers believe that of USC’s “thunder and lightning” running back tandem, LenDale White, and not Reggie Bush, is the one that who will be the most successful in the NFL. They note that in the Rose Bowl against Texas, with the national championship on the line, the Trojans more often handed the ball to White and the big back responded with 124 rushing yards (6.2 per carry) and three touchdowns.
White’s physical, north-south style and ability to rack up yards after contact should be a very nice fit at the pro level. While he’s not a homerun threat, he is more than an up-the-gut runner and has the speed to turn the corner on outside runs. His most underrated attribute may be how well he secures the football: in three seasons at USC, White did not fumble a single time.
Even before he showed up at USC’s pro day looking soft and gooey there were questions about White’s self-discipline and work ethic. He’s never been known as a guy who will push himself in the weight room or conditioning program. He missed USC’s spring practice a year ago because he was in danger of becoming academically ineligible.
White has the talent to be a franchise back but also the risk to be a high-maintenance player who won’t do what it takes to fulfill his potential. If he’s not willing to go all out to prepare for the draft with a huge signing bonus on the line, why should he be expected to work hard when he has that money in his pocket?
