Quarterback
Bruce Gradkowski
College: Toledo
Year: Senior
Height: 6’2"
Weight: 210
Birthday: January 27, 1983
Bruce Gradkowski had a record-setting career as a high school quarterback in the Pittsburgh area but recruiters from the big programs weren’t interested, questioning whether the skinny kid would hold up in the major college game.
Gradkowski has completed over 70% of his passes in his two seasons as a starter at Toledo. He has a great feel for anticipating his receivers breaking open and the accuracy to deliver the ball where it needs to be. Gradkowski exudes a quiet conference and is an underrated athlete who can make defenses pay if they don’t respect his running ability.
Gradkowski runs Toledo’s spread offense like a natural but will have to adjust to a pro-style attack in the NFL. Although he has gained about 35 lbs. in college, he is on the small side for a pro.
Gradkowski had three screws inserted in his throwing hand after last year’s MAC championship. He then struggled to grip the ball in the Motor City Bowl and left the game after an ineffective first half. He had a second operation on the hand after the season and was limited to light throwing in spring practice.
Gradkowski is similar to Drew Brees – a productive high school player who the big schools passed over because he lacked the prototype physique but who went on to star in a college spread offense. Like Brees, Gradkowski will need to make his mark with the scouts during the season (assuming he’s healthy) because he lacks the measurables to awe them at the combine and other workouts.
