Tight End
Alex Smith

College: Stanford
Year: Senior
Height: 6’4"
Weight: 255
Birthday: May 22, 1982

Alex Smith’s father Edwin played defensive end for the Broncos in the early 1970s, and the son inherited his father’s NFL-caliber athletic ability. The younger Smith became a Denver-area high school star in basketball and track (in the 400 m and the high jump) and a national blue chip prospect as a tight end that signed with Stanford.

In Smith’s sophomore season at Stanford, injuries decimated the Cardinal tight end ranks, leaving Smith as the only player at the position with any experience. Only wideout Teyo Johnson caught more balls on that team than Smith. Smith’s best outing in 2002 was an eight reception, 120-yard performance in a victory over Arizona. Last year, Smith was the co-starter as Stanford operated primarily out of a double-tight end set. His receiving stats declined as a result, but the Cardinal intend to look his way more often this season.

Smith has excellent hand-eye coordination and the size/speed combination to create mismatches for both linebackers and safeties. He is particularly hard to cover in jump ball situations, since he has the bulk to outmuscle smaller defenders and the leaping ability to go up and get passes that appear out of reach. Smith is only an average blocker and needs to put more effort into this aspect of his game.
