The War Room: Levi Jones, OL, Arizona State
Offensive Line
Levi Jones
College: Arizona State
Year: Senior
Height: 6’6"
Weight: 305
Birthday: August 24, 1979
Strengths: Levi Jones can play guard or tackle and keeps improving with experience. He went to Arizona State on an academic scholarship and made the team as a walk-on. He began his career as a defensive lineman and played left guard in 1999 before moving to tackle last year.
This will be a crucial year for the thus far underachieving Jones. His potential is head and shoulders above anyone else’s, but several injuries have played a part in his disappointing performance to this point. He was impressive during spring drills, though, so he’s off to an encouraging start.
Jones is an exceptional pass blocker and super in running situations. He’s very athletic with good size, speed and power. Some see him playing guard in the NFL, but most think he has the potential to be an excellent tackle.
Areas of concern: Jones, unfortunately, wears an underachievers tag. He has sky’s-the-limit potential, but has too often been hampered by nagging injuries that have stunted his growth.
If he can stay healthy in 2001, and build on the marked improvement he showed this spring, he could finally realize his potential and move up the list of prospects.
Is he sponge-worthy?: Definitely. Jones has an NFL body, smarts and it doesn’t hurt he’s a former defensive lineman. He’s the kind of guy the Texans will take a look at with their pick at the end of the first round — unless Jones puts it all together in 2001. Then, Houston might be using their top pick on him.
He has that kind of potential, but he’ll need a "hey, look at me" kind of season to make that leap.
