The War Room: Roy Williams, WR, Texas
Wide Receiver
Roy Williams
College: Texas
Year: Junior
Height: 6’5"
Weight: 210
Birthday: December 20
Strengths: Roy Williams knows he’s different from everybody else. He can out-run and out-jump just about everyone he meets, but he’s also a unique personality off the field, too. His friends call him a dork, and sometimes his mother doesn’t understand him. He’s every bit a West Texan when you see him and talk to him. That’s if you can slow him down enough to see his hazel-tinted contacts blurring past you.
Williams has the talent of a decathlete. He can run a 100-meter dash in 10.4 seconds, and he can high jump seven feet. On a football field, that talent translates into long strides and a leaping ability that make it unfair to lesser defensive backs. Add to that mix his great hands, and Williams is downright deadly on fade patterns. Like fellow junior All-Everything wideout Charles Rogers, Williams gets more than his share of comparisons to Randy Moss, the gold standard of NFL receivers in the 21st century.
Areas for Concern: Despite being tabbed as Mel Kiper’s best player in college football last summer, the 2001 season did not produce eye-popping results for Williams. Defenses learned how Williams could burn them deep, so they gave him a lot of room underneath to protect against the 40-yard bombs. The Texas offense responded by only getting the ball to Williams on five- and ten- yard routes downfield. Williams’ average yards per catch decreased by nearly ten in 2001, raising the question of how well Williams can create on his own. Williams also needs to improve his concentration when he’s not getting the ball regularly.
To his defense, Williams rarely caught the ball on the run as Simms was sometimes slow in reading zone coverages. Williams was also hobbled by bone spurs, which he’d had since high school. They were eliminated with surgery in January. The Longhorns expect him to be at full speed this fall.
How Would He Look in Steel Blue? Williams could be the local college player fans hope the Texans select next spring. And while local prospects tend to be over-hyped, Williams is possibly one example where the hype is backed by freakish talent. David Carr proved deft at tossing rainbows in Fresno, and Williams is worthy to be the pot of gold at the end of those rainbows in Houston.
