Chad Greenway is the proverbial small town boy who made it, or at least is about to make it, big. He grew up on a 1,200 acre South Dakota farm, and while he led his high school team to two state titles as a quarterback, safety, and return man, he had never played 11-man football until he arrived at Iowa. He had played the nine-player version, and the Hawkeyes were the only Division I-A program to offer him a scholarship.
Five years later, Greenway is an All-American linebacker. Greenway is extremely active and makes plays all over the field. The former defensive back blankets opponents, even wide receivers, in pass coverage like few linebackers can.
The Hawkeyes’ defensive scheme set the front four loose after the quarterback and did not ask the linebackers to do much blitzing, so Greenway has not yet developed a wide array of pass rush moves. He had a disappointing combine workout, bench pressing only 16 reps and running a pedestrian 4.7 40.
Greenway’s best pro position is the weakside spot in a 4-3 because it would allow him to play in space, although he should also be able to play over the tight end in that defense or inside in a 3-4.
