Cornerback
Terence Newman
College:
Kansas State
Year: Senior
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 183
Birthday: September 4, 1978

Strengths: You can’t teach speed, the old cliché goes, but if you could, Terence Newman would qualify for advance placement. Newman doubles as a sprinter on Kansas State’s track team (just a hobby, he says) and won the Big 12 outdoor 100 meter championship in the spring. His personal best time in the event is a blistering 10.22 seconds. He also broke the school record of former football and track teammate Aaron Lockett (a seventh round pick of Tampa Bay in 2002) in the 60 meter dash with a sprint of 6.67 seconds. For comparison purposes, Lockett runs a 4.38/40.

On the football field, Newman proved that he could be a quality cover man during the Cotton Bowl at the end of his sophomore season when injuries moved him into the starting role. Hello, Newman. He rose to the occasion with an impressive game and helped the Wildcats shut down Tennessee’s passing attack. Newman has nice cover skills and adequate size, and his overall game has improved as he has gained experience. Kansas State plays a great deal of man coverage, and as a starter last year he picked off three passes and broke up 17 more.

Newman also contributes on special teams. As a senior, he will get an opportunity to replace Lockett on both punt and kickoff returns. Newman blocked two kicks as a junior and returned a blocked punt for a touchdown as a sophomore.

Areas for Concern: Newman has only started one full season and is still a work in progress. He has lapses in footwork and technique and does not always recognize routes quickly enough, making him susceptible to giving up the occasional big play. Newman must continue to improve as a corner since his margin for error will decrease at the NFL level. He could also stand to become a more physical player.

How Would He Look in Steel Blue? With the popularity of the spread offense in the NFL, there is no such thing as having too many quality cornerbacks. Even if Newman were not ready to start as a rookie, he could contribute immediately as a nickel or dime back, a special team gunner, and possibly a return man.
