Strengths: You certainly can’t argue with the numbers he put up in his senior year, with 5,833 yards passing to set an NCAA record. He has a strong arm and delivers a ball that’s easy to catch. Nimble in the pocket although he’s not really a threat to run. The Cypress Creek product has a quick release, is tough and a good learner.
Areas of Concern: Symons will need to overcome claims that he’s just a product of the pass-happy Texas Tech offense. While he has good touch and arm strength on intermediate routes, scouts question his ability to throw the deep ball. Doesn’t always make good decisions. Symons is a little short for what’s wanted in an NFL quarterback.
2004 Expectations: If the offense is changed to a Tom Brady-style dink-and-dunk offense, Symons would be perfect but he’s no threat to take David Carr’s job. He is most likely to be the fourth quarterback in camp and will fight Dave Ragone for backup time behind Carr and Tony Banks.
