Charles Hill
Position: Defensive Tackle
Drafted: Round 3, #83 overall
Height: 6’2″
Weight: 282
College: Maryland
Birthday: November 1, 1980
Strengths: Last year, Charles Hill emerged as the defensive leader on a very young Maryland unit that surprised a lot of people by making it to the Orange Bowl.
A very good tackler with good lateral quickness, Hill has solid instincts, does not lose ground to offensive linemen easily and has a knack for pressuring the quarterback from the inside. As a sophomore, he was forced to play center in an emergency and from that experience, learned many intricacies of the position. A former basketball player, Hill’s athletic and works hard.
Hill made a name for himself with a 12-tackle, 1-sack performance against Florida State last year. An outstanding student, Hill was named to the All-ACC Academic first team in 2000 and again in 2001.
Areas of concern: Hill’s not appreciably big for a tackle and has trouble fighting through blocks and double teams.
Slower than you’d like for someone his size, Hill can get lost along the line and has a tendency to lose the football while in pursuit.
2002 Expectations: Hill played nearly every down last year at nose tackle, showing he’s both very durable and extremely tough.
As for how he might fit in with the Texans, Dom Capers went into the draft hoping to find at least one defensive starter, so Hill will likely be given a chance to at least earn a spot in Caper’s rotation, which is likely to include at least five players.
He’ll need to add size and increase speed, though, if he expects to excel on the next level.
