Quarterback
Charlie Whitehurst
College: Clemson
Year: Senior
Height: 6’3"
Weight: 225
Birthday: August 6, 1982
Clemson’s Charlie Whitehurst first caught the scouts’ eyes back in 2002: in his first collegiate start, the then-redshirt freshman threw for 420 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions in a 34-31 win over Duke. Whitehurst, whose father, David, was a quarterback for the Packers, is a classic dropback passer with ideal size and solid mechanics. He has a strong arm and the touch to throw a very catchable ball.
Whitehurst is coming off a very disappointing junior season in which he completed barely half of his passes, although that can be blamed at least partially on the Clemson line’s poor pass blocking performance. He needs to bounce back and show that his confidence has not been shaken. Whitehurst will also have to adjust to a new offensive scheme in which he will make the pre-snap reads instead of a coach signaling them in from the sideline.
Whitehurst’s 2004 bears many similarities to now-Texan Dave Ragone’s 2002 season at Louisville: each entered his respective season as one of the highest-rated quarterbacks on the board but slipped after a sub-par year that wasn’t totally his own fault. The key difference is that while 2002 was Ragone’s senior season, Whitehurst has another chance to gain back some ground. He needs to take advantage of that opportunity.
