Linebacker
Ernie Sims
College: Florida State
Year: Junior
Height: 5’11"
Weight: 231
Birthday: December 23, 1984
Ernie Sims III was born to play football for Florida State. His father was a running back for the Seminoles, and his mother was an All-American on the school’s track team. By the eighth grade the younger Sims was playing on a high school varsity squad in Tallahassee, and the running back/linebacker was the consensus top prep prospect in the country by the time that he was a senior.
Sims flies around the field wreaking havoc on offenses. He has great instincts and a nose for the ball. While coaches tend to frown on linebackers running around blocks (and possibly right out of the play) instead of fighting through them, Sims has the speed and vision to pull it off.
Even though Sims bulked up to 231 lbs. (about 10 lbs. over his playing weight) for the combine, he is still undersized. He has had multiple mild concussions and may need to adjust his tackling technique to lessen the impact on his helmet. His character is also a concern after he was arrested last June for domestic battery and resisting arrest stemming from an altercation with his girlfriend. Sims pled guilty to the reduced charge of disorderly conduct.
Sims is best suited for a team with a defense like Tony Dungy’s Cover 2 scheme that is willing to sacrifice size for speed.
