The War Room | HoustonProFootball.com Eric Winston
Position: Offensive Tackle
Drafted: Round 3, 66th Overall
Height: 6’6”
Weight: 310
College: Miami (FL)
Birthdate: November 17, 1983
NFL Comparison: John Tait
Strengths: Winston is a former high school All-American tight end from Midland Lee, and is a very good athlete size and agilit for the tackle position. Was a three year starter for the Hurricanes at left tackle and was named outstanding blocker in the ACC by defensive coordinators in 2005. Technically sound despite only 3 seasons at the left tackle position. Had an outstanding combine, running two sub-5 second 40-yard sprints.
Areas of Concern: Winston suffered a torn ACL in his left knee in 2004. Winston’s short arms (32 ¼”) and average upper body strength make him susceptible to bull rushes. Limited experience at the position and may not be ready to step into a starting role.
2006 Expectations: The Texans currently list Seth Wand as the starting left tackle, and Winston should provide instant competition. Considered a top 10 pick prior to his knee injury, Winston could be the left tackle the Texans have searched for since the franchise’s inception.
