Quarterback
Andrew Walter

College: Arizona State
Year: Senior
Height: 6’4"
Weight: 235
Birthday: May 11, 1982

Andrew Walter seriously considered entering the draft after his junior season, but despite the NFL draft advisory board’s estimate that he would have been a second-round pick, he ultimately decided to return to Arizona State.

Walter has a rifle arm and can snap the football downfield with great velocity and accuracy. He can also make touch passes and understands that he does not need to throw everything as hard as he can. Walter sees the field well and hangs tough in the pocket in order to get the pass off, even when the pass rush is closing in on him. He gave USC’s talented defense a scare last year, passing for 305 yards in what was a tight game until the Trojans pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Last year Walter and the Sun Devil team as a whole did not live to the high expectations that they had created for themselves through flashes of brilliance in 2002. In 2003, Arizona State struggled to a 5-7 record and Walter’s passing stats declined slightly. Although he brought his interception numbers down, Walter still has a tendency to place too much confidence in his arm, believing that he can thread the needle and get the ball to a covered receiver. His mechanics also get sloppy at times. He is purely a pocket passer and not much of a threat to make plays with his feet.

Walter has a chance to significantly improve his draft standing this season. He has the tools, but still needs to put it all together on a consistent basis.
