Quarterback
Aaron Rodgers

College: California
Year: Junior
Height: 6’1"
Weight: 200
Birthday: December 2, 1983

Cal head coach Jeff Tedford has had a hand in the development of several first-round quarterbacks in his various coaching stops: Trent Dilfer and David Carr at Fresno State, Akili Smith and Joey Harrington at Oregon, and Kyle Boller at Cal. His current quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, is making a bid to join that list in 2005 or 2006.

Rodgers transferred to Cal last year after playing at the junior college level for a season. The man from Chico, California began the 2003 campaign in a rotation but eventually earned the starting job. Rodgers led the Golden Bears to seven wins in his nine starts, including one over otherwise undefeated USC (although he did not finish that game due to injury).

Tedford loves Rodgers’ poise, competitiveness, intelligence, and leadership. He has a live arm and above-average mobility. Rodgers’ best performance came when he torched a talented Virginia Tech defense by completing 77% of his passes for 394 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.

Perhaps as a result of his lack of major college experience, Rodgers lacked consistency and was hot and cold last season. He is also smaller than the ideal for an NFL franchise quarterback. Rodgers underwent a surgical procedure on his left knee in January and did not participate in spring practice but should be ready for the season.

Rodgers will have to prove that he is more like Carr and Harrington than Smith, and can translate his college success to the next level. He may need another year of Tedford’s tutelage to maximize his draft rating.
