Kyle Orton’s tenure at Purdue has had its share of ups and downs, but the gritty quarterback has battled through every obstacle that he has faced. As a true freshman, Orton played in a rotation before eventually becoming the full-time starter. The next season, he found himself embroiled in another position battle and lost the job after throwing three interceptions against Ohio State. Instead of sulking, he came off the bench in the fourth quarter the following week against Michigan State to throw only one pass, which resulted in a 40-yard game-winning touchdown. Orton followed that up with several efficient performances and solidified his role as the Boilermaker’s leader.
Orton has become very comfortable at the controls of Purdue’s complex offense. He is very accurate in the short and intermediate passing game and adept at hitting his receivers in stride. His coaches and teammates admire his toughness; he played in the Boilermakers’ bowl game last year with a dislocated thumb, a sprained toe, and a cracked rib. Orton is not a great runner but can buy time with his feet. He is also a smooth ball handler who keeps the defense guessing on play action fakes and draws.
Orton has an average arm and going deep is not one of his strengths. He also tends to hold onto the ball too long, waiting for a receiver to break free instead of throwing it away. Orton does not have a quick enough release to get away with this and as a result takes too many hits and sacks.
Orton should thrive in a West Coast Offense on the pro level due to his ability to read defenses and accuracy. His intangibles make him a much better prospect than he is based solely upon his physical tools.
