Quarterback
Dan Orlovsky

College: Connecticut
Year: Senior
Height: 6’4"
Weight: 226
Birthday: August 18, 1983

Dan Orlovsky spurned scholarship offers from the likes of Michigan State, Virginia, and Purdue to take on the challenge of helping his home state’s school make its mark as a major college football program. Connecticut was only in its second season playing at the Division I-A level when true freshman Orlovsky took over as the Huskies’ starting quarterback.

Orlovsky has become Mr. UConn Football. His progress each season has had an impact on the team’s win column – his passer rating (using the NFL formula) has improved from 62.8 to 85.5 to 92.5, and the Huskies’ record has jumped from 3-8 to 6-6 to 9-3. He has NFL size and has proven himself to be tough and durable. Orlovsky has a strong, accurate arm and is able to zip the ball into tight spots. He runs well and can throw while on the move. Pushed from an early age by an extremely involved father, Orlovsky is a focused, driven individual.

Orlovsky has a tendency to lock onto receivers, which results in interceptions and sometimes heartbreak. He threw at least one pick in 10 of 12 games last season. With a few seconds left in a tied game against NC State last year, he made an ill-advised throw that a linebacker picked off and returned 56 yards for the winning touchdown.

Scouts have not had much of a chance to see Orlvosky take meaningful snaps against top competition as the Huskies have been outmanned against those opponents (such as Virginia Tech in 2003 and Miami in 2002). However, the talent level around him is improving and UConn joins the reconfigured Big East this season. Still, Orlvosky’s performance in the postseason all-star weeks will significantly factor into his final draft standing as he will have the opportunity to play both with and against high-caliber players.
