Tight End
Heath Miller
College: Virginia
Year: Junior
Height: 6’4"
Weight: 255
Birthday: October 22, 1982
Heath Miller gave up his dreams of throwing touchdown passes and instead starting catching them. Okay, he may not have totally dropped the idea of being a passer, as he did toss a 20-yard strike for a touchdown on a trick play.
As a Virginia high school star, Miller received all-state honors as a quarterback, safety, and first baseman, and all-region recognition as a basketball player. He realized that his best chance at long-term success was at tight end, so he earned the starting job at that position by his redshirt freshman season. As a sophomore, he was the Cavaliers’ leading receiver and a critical piece of their offense.
Miller is very adept at using his body to keep defenders away from the ball and has soft hands. He does most of his damage in the short zones, but does have the speed to challenge defenders deep. Miller is still refining his skills as a route runner, but has shown improvement in that area each year. As might be expected of a former quarterback, blocking is not his strong suit, but he has also made progress there that coincides with the 30 lbs. of muscle that he has added since arriving on campus.
If Miller elects to come out early for the 2005 draft, he is expected to be the first tight end selected. He could be very productive in the West Coast Offense that is so prevalent around the NFL.
