Tight End
Matt Herian

College: Nebraska
Year: Junior
Height: 6’4"
Weight: 242
Birthday: October 7, 1983

Few tight ends qualify for the "deep threat" label, but Matt Herian has earned the title by averaging 22 yards per catch last season. To put that number in perspective, each of the seven wideouts selected in the first round of the 2004 draft averaged less than 19 yards per reception last year.

Herian understands how to get off the line of scrimmage and work through traffic to get into his routes. He has a smooth, effortless stride that disguises his excellent speed. Herian is quick and smart enough to get separation from most linebackers and safeties and has big, soft hands.

Play-action fakes often caused defenders to hesitate against Nebraska’s run-first (and usually second and third) attack, giving Herian an extra moment to make his move. In the Huskers’ new West Coast scheme, his number should be called more often, although the short passing attack may bring his gaudy yardage average down.

Having played in Nebraska’s option offense for two years, Herian knows how to block. However, even though he has added 20 lbs. to his lanky frame since arriving in Lincoln, he still lacks the strength and bulk to be a real factor as a blocker in the NFL.

Herian is best suited for the receiving tight end/h-back role in most NFL offenses, such as the one Billy Miller fills for the Texans.
