Tight End
Ben Watson
College:
Georgia
Year: Senior
Height: 6’3"
Weight: 255
Birthday: December 18, 1980

Strengths: Ben Watson would be an NFL rookie right now had he not had a last-minute change of heart. Watson submitted the paperwork to waive his final year of college eligibility and enter the 2003 NFL draft, but before the deadline to declare had expired, he decided to stay at Georgia for one more season and had his name taken off the draft-eligible list.

Watson, who bench presses 565 lbs., is a physical blocker who sprang Georgia running back Musa Smith for big gains on more than one occasion last year. He is adept at fighting off attempts to jam him and is able to work quickly through the traffic at and near the line of scrimmage to get into his pass pattern. Watson has the concentration to make difficult receptions in a crowd and is strong enough to break tackles and rumble for extra yards after the catch.

Articulate, focused, intelligent, and humble, Watson is an NFL United Way commercial just waiting to happen. He has already received his degree in finance and will be taking graduate courses this season while he completes his football eligibility. Watson mentors children at a local church in his free time.

Areas of Concern: At somewhere between 6’2½” and 6’3”, Watson is a littler shorter than scouts like an NFL tight end to be. Watson also relies more on brute strength than technique as a blocker, which could cause him problems against NFL defensive ends and linebackers against whom he may not have the same physical advantages as he did against college players.

How Would He Look in Steel Blue? Watson definitely fits the profile of what the Texans are looking for when it comes to citizenship and community involvement. Dom Capers would also love his work ethic and consistency. Watson should develop into a quality NFL tight end, but since that is one of the few positions where the Texans have some depth, Watson will likely be playing for another team when he does.
