Running Back
Greg Jones
College:
Florida State
Year: Junior
Height: 6’1"
Weight: 245
Birthday: May 4, 1981

Strengths: Florida State’s Greg Jones made a name for himself with the scouts last year after his performances in two games. Against Clemson, he ran for 165 yards on 22 carries, scored three touchdowns, and had a 64-yard run to set up another score that would give the Seminoles the lead for good. On one of his touchdown runs, he broke eight tackles over the course of 21 yards and drew comparisons to the immortal Earl Campbell. The next week, Jones battered the star-studded Miami defense for 189 yards and a touchdown on 31 rushes.

Jones is a powerful, bulldozer of a runner in the Jerome Bettis mold. His tough, physical style must make his cousin, boxing legend Joe Frazier, proud. Jones is faster and has quicker feet than most big backs, so he is more than just a plodding, move-the-pile type. He is also capable of running to the outside and breaking off long runs when he gets into the open field.

Areas of Concern: Jones missed the last four games of Florida State’s season after injuring his knee against Wake Forest. He actually hurt the knee twice in that game, aggravating the damage when he returned to action after the initial injury. Jones had surgery to repair the damage and sat out spring practice but is expected to be ready for the season.

Jones has a tendency to try to juke and dance too much rather than keeping his pads low and shoulders square. This causes him to lose his greatest attribute as a runner – his power – and he becomes very average.

How Would He Look in Steel Blue? Jones’ proven ability to gain yards after contact would suit him well on a team with an offensive line that has struggled to open holes as the Texans have. Assuming that he is healthy, Jones is the type of big back that a defensive-minded coach like Dom Capers would love to use to hammer away at the opponent, establish the run, and control the clock.
