Strengths: Just a sophomore, Tommie Harris is already a Sports Illustrated cover boy, nabbing the honor even before our very own David Carr.
But expectations have always been high for the Texas-reared Harris, who started last year for Bob Stoops as a true freshman on what many considered the best defense in college football.
Big (with plenty of room for growth), Harris is extremely quick for a man his size, possessing 4.67 speed and the ability to run players down from behind. Not that many get by him. He’s a run stuffing tackle with pass rush skills.
Harris has amazing footwork, a body sculpted by the Greek Gods and the ability to turn on a dime; his mere presence requires a double-team, and he still managed 17 quarterback hurries last year.
Areas for Concern: Harris is kind of like the Olsen twins; a.k.a off limits. As a true sophomore, he’s not eligible for the 2003 draft, but the Texans have a three-year plan, and Harris figures to be a prominent fixture in the 2004 class; he’s that good.
He needs to fill out his frame and just continue on his current path; his concerns at this point are minimal as he’s already one of, if not the best players on a very good and very deep Oklahoma team.
How Would He Look in Steel Blue? Real, real nice. Harris is already being compared to Lee Roy Selmon, arguably the best Sooner defensive player ever.
Harris is beyond mature for his 19 years. A preacher’s son, Harris is a good, though loquacious, kid that teammates absolutely love. And like former Sooner Rocky Calmus, he refused to pose for Playboy’s All-American team, saying he had no interest in pushing Hugh Hefner’s agenda.
The Texans will likely scout Harris extensively the next two years.
