Wide Receiver
Andre Johnson
Year: Junior
Height: 6’3"
Weight: 220
Birthday: July 11, 1981

Strengths: Andre Johnson knows when to play his best. When his team had a shot at winning the National Championship, he knew it might be a good time to strut his best stuff. And after a performance that included seven catches for 199 yards and two touchdowns, Johnson found himself kissing the Sears Trophy in the game’s aftermath with co-MVP honors to boot.

The Rose Bowl performance exemplifies the allure of Johnson. That night, he may have single-handedly dropped Nebraska cornerback Keyou Craver from a possible second round selection to the fourth round. Johnson out-muscled Craver for his first score of the game and continued to burn him until the Huskers desperately switched corners to defend him. Johnson could not to be contained.

A track star, Johnson won a Big East 60-meter event in February (6.83 seconds) and another 100-meter event in May (10.59 seconds). When given the chance, he may post sub-4.4 speed in the 40-yard dash. Johnson’s size makes him a load to handle, and he uses it to play physical off the line of scrimmage, just like the rest of his Hurricane teammates. Johnson is unafraid to go across the middle and make a leaping play in traffic. He is also good at returning kickoffs for Miami.

Areas for Concern: All was not roses for Johnson last spring. He was caught cheating on a sociology exam with two other Miami football players, then later was busted after plagiarizing a final exam paper in a different sociology class. At first, a student council voted to suspend him for the year, including the football season, but that was later reduced by a different panel, made up of two administrators and a student. He is now at the center of a controversy around the level of preferential treatment college athletes receive.

On the field, Johnson is still a little raw in some areas. He is inconsistent with his hands and in his route running. How much has his collegiate track career taken away from his focus on developing as a football player?

How Would He Look in Steel Blue? Imagine a guy like Michael Irvin in a Texans uniform. Or better yet, think of Terrell Owens without the attitude. Johnson has that kind of upside. The cheating incident aside, Johnson is a soft-spoken individual with a laid-back personality. He could be the complete receiver the Texans need to take their offense to a playoff level.
