Strengths: Wright has experience at both tackle and end in a 4-3 defense and should get looks in a 3-4 at both nose tackle and end. He is quick off the snap and at times is able to get good penetration into the offensive backfield. Wright plays hard and never quits on a play. As a senior, he led his team in tackles for loss with 24 and third on the team in total tackles with 92 (most among Missouri defensive linemen). At Missouri’s pro day, he bench pressed 225 lbs. an impressive 32 times.
Areas of Concern: At 6’1”, Wright is short for an NFL defensive lineman and may have a hard time keeping taller offensive linemen with long arms off of his body. He currently weighs close to 300 lbs., but played last season at 275 so it remains to be seen how well he functions with the additional weight. At 275, he had trouble holding up against the run. While he does have some quickness, he lacks the athleticism and closing burst to be a top pass rusher. Even though he gives great effort during games, Wright does not always work as hard in the off season as he should.
2003 Expectations: Wright will have a hard time overcoming his physical limitations at any of the Texans’ defensive line positions. The Texans prefer massive widebodies to keep blockers off of the linebackers, but he may be able to turn some heads if he is consistently able to penetrate and make plays. They can always use a lineman who is able to get upfield and disrupt, but Wright must prove that he can still do that with his added bulk.
