This season Michael Boley has the opportunity to emerge from the shadow of former Southern Miss linebacker Rod Davis. Davis got the All-American and conference defensive player-of-the-year honors last season, but Boley was no slouch. Boley’s 2003 numbers stack up very well — Davis edged Boley in tackles, but Boley led the Golden Eagles in tackles for loss, sacks, and fumble recoveries.
Boley uses his speed and instincts to make plays all over the field from his position on the strong side in Southern Miss’ 4-3 defense. An exceptional all-around athlete, Boley rushed for over 1,000 yards, averaged 44 yards per kickoff return, posted over 100 tackles, and picked off five passes as a high school senior. Unlike many linebackers, he is an asset in coverage and can stay in the game on passing downs. Boley also excels on special teams.
Boley is undersized and may struggle if he does not play behind linemen who can keep blockers off of him. In addition, at Southern Miss with Davis beside him, he has been given great freedom to cut loose and chase the football. Boley may run himself out of plays at the NFL level until he adjusts to playing a more structured role.
When he inquired as to where he might go in the 2004 draft, Boley was advised that he would likely be a third- or fourth-round pick. While he lacks ideal size for a 3-4 inside linebacker, his track record as a playmaker earns him a closer look.
