The War Room: Rashaun Woods, WR, Oklahoma State
Wide Receiver
Rashaun Woods
College: Oklahoma State
Year: Senior
Height: 6’2"
Weight: 190
Birthday: October 17, 1980
Strengths: Rashaun Woods has always dreamed of being a pro. A pro bass fisherman, that is. The Oklahoma City native competes in bass fishing tournaments and would one day like to do so full time. In the mean time, he should be able to make a nice living catching passes rather than fish.
Woods was one of the most productive receivers in college football last year, finishing with at least six catches in every game. He had less than 100 yards in only four games. He plays with textbook technique, runs with precise routes, and makes sharp cuts to separate himself from defenders. Woods has sure hands and adjusts very well to poorly thrown passes.
He also proved in 2002 that he can play against the top cornerbacks. In what many considered one of the best individual match-ups of the season, Woods emerged from a physical battle with Kansas State’s Terence Newman with a respectable eight catches for 77 yards and a touchdown. He embarrassed Oklahoma’s Andre Woolfolk, another first rounder, with 12 catches for 226 yards and three touchdowns in Oklahoma State’s second consecutive upset win over the Sooners.
Areas for Concern: Woods does not have the measurables of an elite receiver prospect — he’s skinny, not especially tall, and has only average speed. He must show that he can consistently get separation from NFL corners, since he won’t be able to blow by or outmuscle them. Woods has less room for error than some of the other top wideouts because he has does not have the great natural ability on which to fall back.
How Would He Look in Steel Blue? Woods has shown that he is too good of a football player to discount just because he isn’t 6’4” and doesn’t run a 4.3 40. Having him in a Texans uniform would mean two games a year in which he could be matched up against Tennessee’s Woolfolk, which could be a very good thing for Houston based on their previous meetings.
