Wide Receiver
Fred Gibson
College: Georgia
Year: Senior
Height: 6’3"
Weight: 202
Birthday: October 26, 1981
In his first two years at Georgia, Fred Gibson played as a reserve shooting guard on the Bulldog basketball team, but he dropped that sport to concentrate on football. Even though he has given up his hoop dreams, the traits that made him a standout basketball player continue to serve him in his football career. Gibson has nice height for a wideout, above-average leaping ability, and great quickness.
Gibson has an innate feel for running routes, which, combined with his exceptional speed and acceleration, allows him to separate from most cornerbacks. He is an elusive open field runner and does much of his damage after the catch. Gibson was an effective kickoff returner as a freshman and sophomore, but only saw spot duty in that role last season.
Gibson has a reputation for being brittle, having missed time due to hamstring pulls and a knee bruise last season. He also tends to disappear at times, a problem likely connected with his injuries. Gibson scored a touchdown in Georgia’s 2003 season opener but did not taste the end zone again until their bowl game. He has worked to add needed muscle during the offseason but it remains to be seen if the new bulk slows him down.
A successful senior season is crucial to Gibson’s draft status. If he can stay healthy and consistently play up to his potential, he will be one of the first receivers off the board. If not, he will be considered a risky pick and his stock will drop.
