Being born on Valentine’s Day might be enough of a burden to carry as a football player, but if you’re an opponent of Justin Miller, just don’t be stupid and call him Cupid. Miller is the type of brash, trash talking, big hitter that would make you want to think twice before asking him for a box of chocolates. Not that he shies from making contact – actually, he’s quite the opposite of shy – but if he does, it’ll be to bust the chops of some poor wide receiver.
Miller burst onto the college football scene as a freshman, tying a Clemson record snaring eight interceptions. He also made his mark that year averaging more than 35 yards per kickoff return. Miller also showed he had some brains to go with his brawn when he made the cut for the 2003 ACC All-Academic football team.
Miller entered his sophomore season riding a big wave of preseason hype, and in the eyes of many, he failed to live up to those lofty expectations. Though he’s maintained a clean record since his drunken driving arrest in 2002, Miller’s youthful exuberance had some coaches around Clemson questioning his maturity, focus, and consistency. Miller has been fooled deep in coverage, biting on play action passes one too many times.
While Miller’s desire to make a Heisman push by becoming a two-way player is certainly admirable, he might be better served long-term by showing improvement as a playmaking corner. He did cap off his second year with a standout Peach Bowl performance, breaking up three passes and notching eight tackles, including his first career sack.
