Defensive Lineman
Orien Harris
College: Miami
Year: Senior
Height: 6’3"
Weight: 302
In 2004, Orien Harris was supposed to pick up where his former linemate, Vince Wilfork, left off and become the latest in a long line of great Miami Hurricane defensive linemen. He came to “The U” as one of the top recruits in the country and the brother of an NFL first rounder, 49er offensive tackle Kwame Harris. While Orien has been a quality player at the major college level, he hasn’t developed into the superstar that many expected.
Harris has the strength. He plays with leverage to control the line at the point of attack and can push the pocket. He has some skills as an interior pass rusher, but is more of a stay-at-home tackle than one whose game is based on shooting the gaps. He plays hard and is a vocal leader.
Harris hurt his shoulder in two-a-days before his junior year and played all season with the injury. He had surgery in the offseason and bounced back to have a strong season for the Hurricanes in 2005. Harris has missed having someone like Wilfork to draw blocks away from him. He does a nice job of taking on double teams to free up his teammates, but struggles to get off blocks and make plays himself.
Harris could play end in a 3-4 defense or tackle in a 4-3. He’s not going to be a dominating pass rusher at the NFL level, but he should do more than hold his own and will help a team looking to shore up its run defense.
