A.J. Hawk proved as a senior that he could come up big in the big games. Against eventual national champion Texas, he had 12 tackles, including two sacks of Vince Young, an interception, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Against Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl, he had another dozen tackles and a sack of the Irish’s Brady Quinn. By the way, did you know that Hawk is dating Quinn’s sister? ABC skipped over that in its Fiesta Bowl coverage.
Hawk plays with reckless abandon and hammers ballcarriers. He has great vision and can sort through traffic to find the ball. He is a dangerous blitzer with explosive speed, as he showed at Ohio State’s pro day when he ran two sub-4.5 40s. Hawk has been very durable and did not miss a single game or practice in his college career.
Hawk’s current status is more a result of his hard work rather than pure athleticism. While his drive to succeed is a definite positive, he is not as smooth in coverage or when he has to change directions as are some of the linebackers with greater natural gifts.
Hawk will be the second defensive player off the board on draft day. Because he combines a track record of production at the major college level with great physical tools and intangibles, he is the closest thing to a “can’t miss” prospect in this draft.
