Wide Receiver
Jason Hill
College: Washington State
Year: Junior
Height: 6’1"
Weight: 202
Birthday: February 20, 1985
A dozen wide receivers have been selected in the first round during the last two drafts. Of those, only Falcons 2005 pick Roddy White was drafted after a season in which he averaged more than 20 yards per catch. As a sophomore last year at Washington State, Jason Hill bested White’s mark of 20.5 by almost two yards per reception.
When Hill gets the ball, there is an inordinately high likelihood that he’ll end up in the endzone. During one stretch last year he caught 11 passes and eight of them were for touchdowns. At that point, the WSU band must have started tuning up for the Cougar fight song whenever they saw a pass thrown his way.
Hill only has one year of real experience as a receiver at the college level; as a freshman, he was primarily a gunner on kick coverage teams. This year defenses will gameplan to take away the deep ball, so he will have to show that he can get open underneath and do more than stretch the field.
The Texans hope that Jerome Mathis will develop into the deep threat to complement Andre Johnson. Hill is the same type of player as Mathis, although if Hill responds well to opponents’ attempts to take him out of his comfort zone, he will have a chance to be drafted much higher than in the fourth round as Mathis was.
