Linebacker
Abdul Hodge
College: Iowa
Year: Senior
Height: 6’0"
Weight: 236
Birthday: September 9, 1982
Abdul Hodge earned the nickname “Hitman” from the vicious licks that he put on his teammates in a tackling drill. Soon his fellow Hawkeyes were cutting in line to avoid being matched up against him. It’s hard to believe that Hodge also has a soft side and enjoys spending his free time watching Sesame Street with his four year-old daughter, but he does.
Hodge, a native of the Virgin Islands who grew up in Florida, inspires his teammates with his passionate approach to the game. He is instinctive, isn’t fooled by misdirection or play action, and takes proper angles to quickly close on the ballcarrier. He is very strong in the upper body and can shed the blocks of offensive linemen.
Hodge lacks ideal height for a pro linebacker, although he has a stout, compact build. He is not the most fluid athlete and may have trouble matching up in coverage against NFL running backs. He’s better at getting through the trash between the tackles than playing in space.
Hodge will play middle linebacker in a 4-3 or inside in a 3-4. He should eventually establish himself as his team’s defensive leader, possibly sooner rather than later.
