Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. In 2002, Bowling Green lost a quarterback commitment only two weeks before signing day. Scrambling to fill the hole so late in the recruiting season, Falcon coach Urban Meyer came across Omar Jacobs, an uncommitted prospect who had slipped through the cracks for no apparent reason. Finding Jacobs at the eleventh hour would prove to be most fortunate for Bowling Green two years later.
After redshirting in his first season and playing sparingly in his second, Jacobs burst upon the national scene in 2004. He led the nation with 41 touchdown passes and was second in passing yards. Jacobs’ 41-to-4 touchdown-to-interception ratio was the best in Division I-A history, and his passer rating (using the NFL formula) was a stellar 119.9. He has all of the physical tools: size, athletic ability, arm strength, and accuracy.
Bowling Green’s offensive scheme may help Jacobs look better than he really is. If 2005 top pick Alex Smith shines as a rookie, it could help erase this “product-of-the-system” criticism of Jacobs since Smith starred in a very similar multiple spread offense at Utah under Meyer.
If Jacobs has another season like 2004, he will probably follow in the footsteps of fellow Mid-American Conference product Ben Roethlisberger and pass on his senior season. Jacobs would have a chance at being drafted even earlier than Big Ben, who was taken with the eleventh pick.
