Quarterback
Reggie McNeal
College: Texas A&M
Year: Senior
Height: 6’1"
Weight: 209
Birthday: September 20, 1983
Reggie McNeal has always been a great athlete, as he showed last spring when he ran a sub-4.3 40 for scouts. Throughout his career he has also often flashed the arm to wreak havoc through the air, such as when as a true freshman he burned Oklahoma’s talented secondary with four touchdown passes in the Aggies’ 2002 upset of the Sooners.
In 2004, McNeal turned the corner from promising talent to polished star as he showed the poise, consistency, and efficiency that had been missing before. He was very careful with the football; only 1.2% of his pass attempts were intercepted. But he didn’t accomplish this by going into a shell; McNeal set personal bests in every passing statistical category and his scrambles were some of the Aggies’ biggest plays.
McNeal has suffered numerous injuries in his time at Texas A&M: a sprained ankle, a sports hernia, torn rotator cuff cartilage, torn thumb ligaments, and a bruised shoulder. Even though he played through many of these problems, he may not be able to hold up as well over a longer NFL season while enduring hits from bigger, faster, and stronger players. McNeal spent the offseason working to bulk up his lean frame in order to improve his durability.
McNeal should be the best combination of speed, athleticism, and arm strength to hit the NFL draft since Michael Vick in 2001, but the question of whether his body and playing style will be compatible at the pro level remains. The team that selects him will have to strike a balance between letting him improvise outside the pocket and keeping him in one piece.
