Gabe Watson loves to crack jokes and keep the mood light to get through difficult times. And he’s seen more than his share of those, growing up with a mentally ill mother in a Detroit neighborhood where drive-by shootings were a common occurrence.
When Watson is in shape and motivated, he can dominate the middle of the line. He must be doubled-teamed, and often even that isn’t enough to stop him. Watson is so huge and hard to move that he would be ideal on the nose in a 3-4 defense or as a two-gapper tackle in a 4-3. A former high school triple-threat football star (offensive tackle, defensive tackle, and kicker) and wrestler, Watson is also a better athlete than most players his size.
But Watson is not always in shape, and when he’s not, he wears down and disappears for long stretches of games. Watson frustrated his coaches at Michigan with his inconsistent effort, causing them to pull him from the starting lineup for a time during his senior year despite his great talent.
Watson is a high-risk, high-return prospect. If the team that drafts him can keep him in shape and motivated, he could be a cornerstone of their defense. If not, he will be a career tease who never lives up to his potential.
